This recognition from a respected national publication reflects the dedication and expertise of producers who prioritise early harvesting, rapid cold extraction and sustainable olive cultivation. Both oils offer distinct profiles—one refined and subtle, the other powerful and intense—suited to different culinary uses and pairing styles.
How did the Independent conduct its olive oil review?
The Independent’s selection process for the “Best Olive Oils 2022” involved an expert tasting panel led by its IndyBest food editors. Oils were assessed over multiple criteria including aroma, flavour profile, production methods, packaging and value. For each sample the judges grilled the oil neat and with simple food pairings like bread and salad, scoring characteristics such as fruitiness, bitterness and peppery finish. The panel comprised experienced food writers and olive-oil sommeliers who sourced oils from across Europe. By combining sensory analysis with contextual factors like traceability and bottle design, The Independent identified which oils stood out in subtle versus intense fruitiness.
