The PDO Val di Mazara extra virgin olive oil (new harvest 2023/2024) is a balanced extra virgin olive oil whose character is perfectly suited to Queen Galerana, the paladin chosen to represent it on the label. It is defined as balanced as it combines several herbal scents in total harmony. It was created within the PDO Val di Mazara area, which includes the province of Palermo and the western part of the province of Agrigento and represents one of the excellences of the territory. Sweet at first taste, it then follows on to bitter and spicy notes. It adapts well to any dish and its strength lies in being able to moderate bitterness, enhancing even the most delicate flavours. Versatile by nature, it is an oil that can be used on any dish. However, it particularly enhances sauces and marinades, especially those with rocket.
The Bono PDO Val di Mazara extra virgin olive oil won a Great Taste Award from the Guild of Fine Foods in 2024. Here are some of the comments by the judges:
"A fruity oil with very fresh, green aromas. Grass, green almonds, tomato plant were amongst the aromas detected. Medium in terms of pepperiness and bitterness, more pungent than bitter, with fresh green flavours. Very vibrant and fresh and its mild to medium characteristics would give this oil wide consumer appeal."
"With aroma notes of green apple and artichoke, the judges were delighted by this complex yet light olive oil. The high polyphenolic content immediately appealed to the judges along with the peppery burn and clean finish"
"The olive oil has a beautiful light green colour and a fresh, grassy aroma. The flavours of grass, florals and citrus all come through and the oil is very smooth, with no harshness at all. There is a clean, fresh aftertaste."
